Conservation and Charity Trips
Fishing is a past time that can be enjoyed by all ages and skill levels. Whenever possible, guests are encouraged to practice catch and release techniques. For many species such as wild Coho salmon, bull trout, cutthroat trout and rainbow trout, catch and release in rivers is mandatory. All sturgeon are mandatory catch and release.
Sturgeon Conservation trips
Fraser Legends Fishing Charters supports the conservation efforts that are undertaken and overseen by the Fraser River White Sturgeon Conservation Society. http://www.frasersturgeon.com All our trips practice special handling techniques that allow the sturgeon to be safely examined, checked for injuries. We will scan the fish and if necessary implant Passive Integrated Transponder (PITT) chips. All catches are recorded for length and weight and general health. Sometimes, special tissue sampling is done to support research by the B.C. Ministry of Environment or the University of British Columbia. Student Participation Conservation Trips Students wishing to enter higher education/careers in science, biology, medicine often benefit from the experience gained on sturgeon conservation trips. These are valuable activities to add to resumes and school application forms. These trips are excellent for parents wanting to teach their children about environmental stewardship. |
Student Participation Conservation trips may be scheduled by parents, students or teachers as part of their career day or job shadowing curriculum. Trip participants may help by preparing for the trip, fighting the fish, assist with measurement and recording of data, taking scientific field data, photographs and notes and writing reports. We are trained and certified sturgeon tissue samplers and electronic taggers as part of the B.C. Ministry of Environment and Fisheries and Oceans volunteer program. On certain trips, collecting tissue samples or observing the installation of electronic transponders may be done. Conservation trips may spend part or all of the day in areas where little information is known about sturgeon utilization or habitat quality. As such, there may be fewer fish caught than on a regular charter trip. Teachers may inquire for special trip rates for a limited number of trips. In addition to paying trip fees, the students/chaparones should be prepared with camera, note book, their own food and beverage and clothing appropriate for the weather. (See Trip Preparation Page)
