What does a guy who lives and breaths fishing have to do with pipelines and Canadian Politics?
Well, as a professional chemical and environmental engineer (my other life) I have investigated and prosecuted some of the largest environmental offences in Canada including the largest and most expensive inland Oil Spill in Canadian History, the Pembina Pipeline Rupture. I recently testified as an expert witness in another pipeline rupture. Yet pipelines are by far the safest way to transport oil and they are one of the best ways to help diversify our energy sources.
In my third life, I am seeking to become a member of the Parliament of Canada. I want to focus on Fisheries and Environmental issues.
So, I am reaching out to the Environmental and Fishing Community. We have to make our voices heard!
Currently, due to the lack of pipeline capacity, Alberta’s NDP is planning to use public money to buy 7,000 rail tank cars to ship oil to the gulf coast of Mexico, load it onto ships and send it to the mega refineries in India and Malaysia. This oil is discounted by 60% to 70% or more and shipped by the highest environmental risk possible. The Federal liberals have purchased the Kinder Morgan pipeline but cannot be relied upon to bring it to production.
The current tax structure will not actually promote reduction of carbon pollution.
Further, the Liberal Government will impose increasing Carbon Taxes and because of flawed international agreements transfer Carbon Tax funds. Carbon Tax transfer to these countries will allow them receive Canadian oil at vastly discounted prices plus receive Canadian dollars collected under a carbon tax. Essentially, they will get Canadian oil for free. There is virtually no incentive for those countries to change their behavior. Canada will be giving them the oil for free while workeres and families in British Columbia, Alberta and Western Canadian provinces bear the brunt of an economic downturn and lose valuable, highly skilled jobs. This creates uncertainty and dire stresses on Canadian families affected by layoffs.
We need to retain our scientists and engineers to solve our environmental challenges.
Engineers, scientists and skilled trades people are leaving our provinces when they could be developing the alternative energy sources of the future. Canadian entrepreneurs I know have set up companies, based in Canada but investing in the USA. One company has hired two engineering employees in Canada and sent 18 more to the USA to build and run the company there. Loosing this engineering expertise hurts Canada and hurts it badly. Losing this employment and corporate revenue prevents Canada from installing the electrical or hydrogen fuel cell charging stations needed to provide the energy of the future. These are technologies which are being developed right here in British Columbia but being lost to the USA.
We need to Raise Canada Up!
The current NDP and federal Liberal Governments just don’t make sense! It’s time for a change to a Conservative Government in Ottawa and raise Canada Up!
