The temperature was perfect, the water clearing and the eagles were perched in almost every tree, this is the Squamish River at its finest.  Only three days to a new year so it was time to see if the Bull and Rainbow Trout and maybe the Steelhead had arrived. I spotted what looked like a big bull trout and cast the fly just upstream.  To my surprise a very large coho followed it as I stripped it in and nearly beached itself on the shore like a killer whale chasing a seal. I switched to a new secret fly and amazing action followed.

The Bull Trout were playing hard to get but a nice Rainbow hit the fly and gave a sparkling acrobatic fight. The Coho bucks zeroed in on the new secret fly with strike after strike.  It was amazing to see them come in from the dark water and hammer the fly in the shallows. This was followed by Coho after Coho. The fish to the left is about the 18th Coho I hooked today and I landed at least 15.  The great 2013 Coho run was tapering off but there were still plenty of nice fish.  Just prior to this fish, I had been yanked off the gravel bar by a monster Steelhead that would easily have tipped 20 lbs but spit the hook as I gave it slack line while trying to get my balance.  Click here for battling a Coho while trying to film at the same time.!

My last fish of the day was a nice silver Coho doe that hammered the "secret fly" and busted my knuckles (again) with a screaming run. Reluctantly I had to leave the hole and as I walked back across the gravel bar, I knew I was under the watchful eyes of heaven and of the eagles.  A very good day!
